Xiaomi unveiled the Mi 11 in China; the very first smartphone with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor. This not only means that the device is very powerful, but it also has a 108MP camera and an impressive display.
Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 888 in early December and Xiaomi is the first to announce a smartphone with this chipset. The Snapdragon 888 is based on a 5nm chip from Samsung and has an integrated 5G modem. All this makes it more energy efficient and faster. And yet in the press release of the Mi 11 Xiaomi pays more attention to the new display.
It receives an excellent A+ score from DisplayMate; an independent organisation for testing monitors. The 6.81-inch AMOLED panel projects a Quad HD+ resolution of 3200 by 1440 pixels. Quite a bit more than the FHD+ of the Mi 10T and 10T Pro. The refresh rate is slightly slower but still smoother than many other smartphones at 120Hz. The peak brightness does go up considerably; 1500 nits to be exact. This makes it easier to read even in full day-light. The screen is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus which has better scratch and drop resistance.
108MP camera, 8K video
On the back of the Mi 11, the new camera module catches our attention. The 108MP main camera has a silver-coloured ring and is equipped with optical image stabilisation (OIS) and is more light-sensitive according to Xiaomi. Underneath is a 13MP ultra-wide-angle 123° lens with a 5MP 50mm telephoto/macro lens on the right. Video can be shot up to 8K and at the front we find a 20MP selfie camera. There are stereo speakers and the sound has been optimised by Harman Kardon.
The Xiaomi Mi 11 is available in a glass version in the colours Midnight Grey, Horizon Blue and Frost White. There are also two vegan leather versions in the colours Lilac Purple and Honey Beige. Memory options are available in 8GB+128GB, 8GB+256GB and 12GB+256GB. For the time being, the device will only be available in mainland China for a price of around 500 euros, which can be as much as 580 euros for the model with the most storage. When the device will be sold elsewhere, we will have to wait and see.
