Google Pixel 6 product description

The Pixel 6 is a phone that Google wanted to make for years but never could. So Google first made its own chipset, the Tensor, and this Pixel 6 has the honour of being the first phone to get that chipset. It enables it to do things that it couldn't do before. Which exactly and whether this Pixel 6 can deliver on those promises is something we will explore here

Google Tensor

As a bit of a serious phone manufacturer, you don't belong anymore if you don't design your own chips. Much to the chagrin of Qualcomm, Google's previous main supplier, this year Google is using its own processor for the first time. This Tensor, like many other Google services, leans on artificial intelligence, or AI for short. Thru Machine Learning, Google has taught the Pixel 6 what beautiful photos are and what not, and it applies that on a daily basis when you start working with it. High time for some concrete examples.

Google Pixel 6 green overview

Exclusive camera features

And that starts with the camera, of course. On the back of the Pixel 6, we find a 50MP main camera and a 12MP ultra-wide-angle with 114° angle of view. The camera sensor is much larger this year and therefore 150% more sensitive to light. Nite shots are therefore much better exposed. The Pixel phones are known for their HDR + mode where the best colour setting, exposure and contrast are automatically chosen, now also works with video. Partly due to the extra processing power of the Tensor chip. This also makes new functions possible such as removing objects from the background. People, animals, trees. Everything you want to get rid of, it removes and fills in with what should be there. Or Motion Mode where you can add movement for extra dramatic footage. Portrait Mode to blur the background and Face Unblur to bring faces back into focus in out of focus photos. All camera features that are currently exclusive to this Pixel 6

The power of language

Also outside the camera, Tensor helps to make this smartphone even smarter. While calling, for example. Ever have trouble remembering all the options from an automatic menu? Pixel 6 just shows them on screen as buttons. And are you put on hold? Pixel 6 listens for you when someone comes on the line and notifies you. You can do more important things in the meantime. Does Pixel 6 detect that you have an accident, such as a car crash? Then Pixel 6 automatically calls 112 and gives your location if you can not (anymore). More cheerful is the automatic translation function. Without an active internet connexion, you can talk to the Pixel 6 in your native language and it will translate it into a foreign language. Handy for when you get lost abroad

Google has equipped the Pixel 6 with a 6.4-inch Smooth Display. That runs a screen refresh of 90Hz and a sharp FHD+ resolution. The 8MP selfie camera sits in a punch-hole at the top. The entire front is protected by Corning's latest Gorilla Glass Victus. On the back, you'll find Gorilla Glass 6 and the whole thing is IP68 waterproof. Inside is a reasonably sized 4614mAh battery that can be charged wirelessly and allows you to charge other devices wirelessly as well. All in all, the Pixel 6 can truly call itself high-end again and the price and additional camera features make it very attractive.

Google Pixel 6 in the news

Google Pixel 6 6pro

Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro available starting October 28th

This is what Google Tensor can do

Phone news ·

After the initial introduction, Google has finally officially unveiled the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. Both phones will hit stores October 28th for a retail price of $599 and $899 respectively but only in 9 different countries.

Australia, Canada, Germany, Ireland, France, Japan, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and the United States. That's where the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro officially comes out. Residents of other countries have to rely on import or use a forwarding service.

The new Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro

The two new Pixel phones were already announced but some details were still missing. Google has now given those, especially about its own processor: Tensor. Incidentally, much about that was already leaked so there were not many surprises.

Machine Learning

Google likes to work with machine learning, like a lot. It helps to get more natural and better answers in its search engine but Google also applies it to speech recognition and image processing. Previously, Google failed to get the full potential of machine learning out of Qualcomm's chips. The Snapdragon chips are very good at delivering short peaks of powerful performance but not the many billions calculations needed for machine learning. All the more reason for Google to develop its own chip.

Google Tensor chip
The driving force behind the Pixel 6: Google Tensor

Google Tensor

Google's Tensor CPU consists of 8 cores: 2 high performance cores, 2 mid cores and 4 high efficiency cores. The GPU has 20 cores and there is also an ISP (Image Signal Processor), a Context Hub for powering the Always-On Display and a Titan M2 security chip. But perhaps most important is the TPU where the Machine Learning Engine is located. The performance of this engine is poorly measured by traditional benchmarks and therefore Google warns not to look at them solely. And yet Google reports that the Tensor delivers 80% more powerful CPU performance than its predecessor with a 370% faster GPU.

Google Tensor TPU

HDRnet on Tensor

The question arises of what all this is used for? Google Pixel phones were always very good at taking pictures thanks to Computational Photography. An algorithm whereby very impressive photos can be shot with every-day camera hardware. The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro can now do this with video as well due to the increased power. HDRnet on Tensor delivers 4K at 60FPS. During filming, the image from multiple cameras on the device is analysed and processed into one video with unprecedented colour and sharpness.

Magic Eraser

Another application that is now possible is Magic Eraser. You can use it to remove objects from photos. The Pixel 6 already gives suggestions for example if someone is standing in the background. But you can also remove random things by simply drawing a circle around it. Magic Eraser also works with photos you have previously shot. This makes photobombing something of the past.

Google Magic Eraser
Magic Eraser lets you remove people in the background

Face Unblur

Thanks to Machine Learning, the Pixel 6 also immediately knows what is a face and what is not. This makes a feature like Face Unblur possible. Even before you shoot a picture, the Pixel knows that there is a person in the frame. While shooting, the non-active camera also takes a picture with a very fast shutter speed. If the resulted picture produces a blurred face, then the information from the second camera is used to sharpen the face.

Google Face Unblur
With Face Unblur, faces stay sharp

Motion Mode

Sometimes you just want a blurred photo, for example for a dramatic effect. With Motion Mode, the Pixel 6 recognises that you want to take an action picture, for example if you take a picture of a cyclist. The Pixel then gives the moving parts, in this case the background and the wheels, a motion blur effect. Besides suggestions from Google itself, you can also click on the part which you want to have blurred. The result is a creative picture that previously was only possible with expensive equipment or large accessories.

Real Tone

Our phones take better pictures but not everyone for everyone. Especially people with a darker skin tone. When they photograph themselves against a white background, the end result often looks sometimes washed out with low contrast and unnatural skin tones. In order to do something about this, Google asked many photographers for their input and incorporated this in its algorithm, which resulted in Real Tone.

Google Real Tone
Real Tone in action

As a result, the Pixel 6 better recognises faces of people of colour with more nuanced auto white balance and improved auto exposure. According to Google, this makes the Pixel 6 the most inclusive camera available today.

Live Translate

Another area where Machine Learning comes into play is speech recognition. The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro have Voice Typing which is even faster and better understands context. This also makes it possible to translate in realtime. Thanks to Live Translate, you can make yourself understood in countries where you don't speak the language. The new Pixels can also translate images. Point the camera at a road sign with a foreign language and the words will be translated before your eyes.

Google Pixel 6 Call Features
New Call Features

With improved and faster voice recognition, the Pixel can also help you make phone calls. For example, a phone call can be written out for you to read back later. But this is also useful for an automatic menu where the options appear as clickable buttons. No need to remember all those menu options.

Google Pixel 6 Speech Recognition

And if you are put on hold then you can just lay down Pixel and let it listen to the background music. If someone actually comes on the other side, you will be automatically alerted. For now, these seem to be exclusive features for the new Pixel phones.

Pixel 6 available

The Google Pixel 6 and Google Pixel 6 Pro will be available from October 28 but can be pre-ordered now. Both phones will get 5 years of security updates and get various accessories like the new Pixel Stand with active cooling for 23W wireless fast charging. The Pixel 6 is available in Sorta Seafoam, Kinda Coral and Stormy Black. The Pixel 6 Pro gets the colours Sorta Sunny, Cloudy White and Stormy Black. In terms of memory, you can choose between 128 or 256GB with an additional option for the 6 Pro of 512GB.

Rumours ·

By now, not a day seems to go by without the Google Pixel 6 being leaked. This time, it's Evan Blass' turn to post press images of some of the colours.

They are Seafoam Green, Stormy Black and Cloudy White. It looks like the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will each get their own set of colours. The Pixel 6 will then get Seafoam Green (as shown below), Kinda Coral and Stormy Black. The Pixel 6 Pro also gets the latter with Cloudy White and Sorta Sunny as well.

The Google Pixel 6 in Seafoam Green

The smaller Pixel 6 appears to have slightly larger screen bezels than the Pixel 6 Pro. Furthermore, the images teach us that the back will be glossy, something that was previously suggested.

Google Pixel 6 Stormy Black

These images also clearly show that the camera strip sticks out quite a bit. This cosmetic solution gives it a unique look and has one distinct advantage. Your phone does not wobble on a desk when it lies down. On many other phones, the cameras sit on an island, usually in the corner. As a result, it never lies truly flat on a table.

Google is holding an event on Tuesday, October 19 where it will announce the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. Pretty much both phones are now fully leaked. It is hoped for Google that there will be another surprise to reveal because otherwise the event will not be worth watching.

Google Tensor Carphone Warehouse

Google Pixel 6 up to 80% faster than Pixel 5

Rumours ·

The Google Tensor processor. We know it's coming and that it will succeed the Qualcomm Snapdragon. But how much faster is it and what is it capable of?

Via a webpage of Carphone Warehouse we might get an answer. The page has been taken offline but we (fortunately) still have a copy. On this page you can read that the Pixel 6 is up to 80% faster than the Pixel 5

Google Pixel 6 Tensor chipset
More details on the Google Tensor processor

We also read that the processor features On-Device Machine Learning, a custom image processor, and a next-generation Titan M2 security chip. But the headline with "80% faster" is the most important as far as we're concerned but one that we have to put in perspective.

Tensor vs Snapdragon

Because the Google Pixel 5 did not use the Snapdragon 8xx series but the midrange 765G. Comparing this chipset to the Snapdragon 888+ 5G, currently the most powerful Qualcomm chipset, we see a 120% better AnTuTu score and a 95 to 106% higher GeekBench score for the 888+. In other words; the Tensor is not faster than the most powerful Snapdragon processor.

Apart from this, Android 12 also has performance and speed improvements. Google managed to reduce the CPU time by 15 to 22% and the start-up times of apps are improved, especially those started from a notification. Google will announce the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro on Tuesday, October 19, and that will also be the official launch of Android 12.

Pixel Fall Launch 2021

Google announces Pixel 6 launch date

Phone news ·

Google is finally putting an end to the rumours about when the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will be announced. On Tuesday, October 19, the next generation of Pixel phones will be officially launched. They are the first Pixels to feature Google's own Tensor processor.

The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro promise to be one of the most exciting Pixel phones ever. Google has always been putting a lot of effort on good camera performance but the upcoming phones are expected to be even better. Also helped by the Tensor processor altho officially we still don't know what it is capable of.

Pixel Fall Launch
Pixel 6 fall invitation

We hope to see more on October 19. Because at 10 AM PT, which is 7 PM CET, Google will officially launch 2 new Pixels. That date was mentioned before. We've already seen the new Pixel 6 and 6 Pro but Google hasn't revealed the full details until now. Both devices are expected to excel in camera features. Possibly helped by the necessary AI (artificial intelligence).

Qualcomm vs Tensor

It is the first time that Google is moving away from a Qualcomm processor. Previous models, with the exception of the Pixel 5 and Pixel A models, always used the most powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset. Last year, it broke with that tradition which made it look like Google didn't want to compete in the flagship category anymore. The Pixel 6 series seems to prove that this was just a one-time thing.

One More Thing...?

We know from the Pixel 6 that it features a 50MP main camera with 12MP ultra-wide angle. The Pixel 6 Pro has an additional 48MP telephoto lens for optical zoom. The screen sizes are 6.4 and 6.7 inches respectively with 90 and 120Hz screen refresh rates. There have been rumours lately that Google is also working on a foldable of its own. Whether this Pixel Fold will also be shown remains to be seen, images about it have not yet appeared.

Android 12

Android 12 is ready, but not yet available for users

Industry news ·

Google has put the finishing touch to Android 12. The source code has been added to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) which means that phone manufacturers can start creating software updates. That means it will still be a while before you have Android 12 on your phone.

According to Google's blog post, it's expected to be a few weeks before Pixel phones like the Pixel 5 receive the update. Also Samsung Galaxy's, OnePlus phones and Oppo's are expected to release updates soon. Each manufacturer is responsible for their own updates.

Android 12 Material You
Material You in Android 12

According to Google, about 225,000 people have downloaded and tested the Android 12 beta recently. Such a large-scale test ensures that most errors are resolved and in return delivers a stable version suitable for every day use. But the beta also helps developers to adjust their Android apps for Android 12. Android 12 includes a new interface (Material You), several performance improvements and some new privacy settings.

Material You

For users, the new UI will be the most noticeable. Material You builds on Material Design but is highly customisable. Think of colours, shapes and new animations. Google will be explaining Android 12 on October 27 and 28 during #AndroidDevSummit. That event is mainly aimed at developers. For consumers, the launch of the Pixel 6 will be interesting. That too is expected in a few weeks.

Sundar Magic Eraser Demo

"Google Pixel 6 can remove unwanted objects from photos"

Rumours ·

Not long now and Google releases the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. Both phones are fitted with Google's first self-developed chipset; Tensor. Officially, it is still unclear what advantage both phones have because of this. Google itself speaks about camera advantages and we have a solid clue about what exactly.

But first we go back to May 17, 2017. Google held its annual I/O event and showed an interesting demonstration of the Photos app. During this demonstration, unwanted objects were removed from photos. A fence in the foreground or a person in the background. Hugely useful you would say yet this 'Magic Eraser' feature never saw the day of light.

Google Magic Eraser demo
Magic Eraser demo at Google I/O

Back to the Pixel 6 because a reference to this 'Magic Eraser' was found in its source code. So it's quite possible that Google wants to roll out the feature exclusively to the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. And it's quite possible that the Tensor chip will play an important role in that. In its 2017 demo, Google already revealed that this form of object removal is possible thanks to Machine Learning, something the Tensor is extremely good at.

Magic Eraser

This 'Magic Eraser' or 'Swiss' function is not the only feature that XDA Developer found in the source code. 'Face deblur', 'Scene lock' and 'Front torch' are some others. From the name, you can figure out what these features do. Still, we are curious about Google's explanation on this and that may follow soon. If the rumours are true, the official unveiling will take place in mid-October.

Android 12 Material You

Official version of Android 12 expected within "a few weeks"

And with it, the Google Pixel 6

Industry news ·

Google has released beta 5 of Android 12. This is the last beta that Google will release. In the same blog post, Google mentions that we are only a few weeks away from the official launch of Android 12.

Beta 5 doesn't contain visual changes but mostly bug fixes. It is now time for app developers to make their apps compatible with Android 12. The most important feature of Android 12 is Material You. This interface builds on the Material Design style but is highly customisable.

The fact that Android 12 is nearing its final release also means that the launch of the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will soon follow. Some things are already known about the phones, partly because Google already showed them to the public. It even gave some specifications including a 6.4 or 6.7 inch screen respectively. However, our interest goes mainly to the cameras. The company's own Tensor chip should add extra features, but it is still unclear which ones.

Download beta 5

Beta 5 of Android 12 is available for Pixel phones including the Pixel 5 but also for a handful of phones from Asus, Oppo, OnePlus and Xiaomi.

Pixel 6 Zaheed Sabur

Is this photo shot with the Google Pixel 6?

Rumours ·

A Google employe has posted a picture on Facebook. In itself nothing special but according to this employe it was taken with the very latest Pixel phone. The photo was then posted on Twitter but has since been removed.

Now the very last Pixel phone is the Pixel 5a. It's a bit silly to be secretive about that. And furthermore, why take down that picture? Could the Google employe mean the Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro? If so, we understand that he's been told to remove the photo.

Photo taken by Google Pixel 6
Photo possibly shot with the Pixel 6

We don't know for sure so let's look at the photo itself. A man sitting on a bench overlooking a village or city. We have our reservations about the photo. It looks almost unrealistic. The saturated colours and the almost drawn clouds. In itself, it looks like a typical Pixel photo.

Google Tensor

Google has already announced the Pixel 6 but some details are still missing. We do not yet know what the Tensor processor is capable of. This processor has to help the photo and video camera to take better pictures with the help of artificial intelligence. According to Google, this will give them a huge advantage over the competition. But how and how much exactly is still unclear. The above picture alone does not yet help to give us a full answer. So we have to wait for the actual launch. That is expected in October at the earliest.

Google Pixel 6 Material You Tweet

Google employee accidentally leaks information Pixel 6

Rumours ·

Hiroshi Lockheimer, the current Senior Vice President of Android at Google, posted an image on Twitter. In itself nothing special but the image reveals information about the upcoming Pixel 6. The tweet has since been deleted but we have the image.

Hiroshi Lockheimer's tweet was about Material You, Android 12's new design language that you can partially personalise. In it a screenshot showing Material You in action. But the image appears to have been taken with the unannounced Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro

Material You tweetMaterial You screenshot lockscreen
The tweet in question containing the image

We can actually see an as yet unknown fingerprint ikon. Most likely, this is the location on the display where the fingerprint scanner is located. Until now, Google always used the scanner on the back. Google has already shown the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro but both have not been officially announced yet. Therefore, certain details are still unknown.

Google Tensor

Most information about the Pixel 6 that is known, is about its own chipset, Tensor. This should outpace the competition especially in the area of machine learning. Google wants to use this to improve photo and video quality. Details like how many megapixels the camera has, how much RAM memory there is and how much the new Pixels should cost are still unknown.

Google Pixel 6 6pro

Google unveils Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro with custom Tensor chip

Phone news ·

Following previously leaked material, Google has pulled the lit and showcased the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. Both phones are not officially announced yet but should be found in stores somewhere around the fall. Still Google wants to talk about them now. Especially the new custom designed processor.

Most companies keep their mouths shut when it comes to unannounced products. Even when everything is already out in the open (Samsung ahum). The always somewhat obstinate Google, however, has had enough after the necessary of the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro leaks. It already unveiled both phones and gave an explanation.

Google Pixel 6
The Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro

This reminds us of the Pixel 4 which Google also showed off well before the announcement. This time Google is going further. Not only do we get to see the entire device now, we get specifications and various media outlets have already seen the Pixel 6 in person.

Specifications Google Pixel 6

This approach is necessary because the new Pixel could use some extra explanation. After all, it's not a usual phone. It is the first with a self-developed chip under the hood. Previously, Google opted for chipsets from Qualcomm, sometimes accompanied by its own chips. Gone is also the mid-range character, both phones are high-end flagships.

Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro

Biggest difference between the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro is the screen size and the 4x zoom camera on the back of the Pixel 6 Pro. Both phones feature a wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle camera with the fingerprint scanner this time in the screen. The Pixel 6 has a maximum screen refresh rate of 90Hz on a 6.4-inch screen, the Pro gets 120Hz on a slightly larger 6.7-inch panel.

Google Tensor

The Google Pixel 6 may be the first 'System on a chip' (SoC), but it's certainly not Google's first chip. For example, the Pixel 2 already featured a home-grown image processor called the Pixel Visual Core (PVC), later followed by the Pixel Neural Core. And in its data centres, Google has been using its own TPU (Tensor Processing Unit) for years.

Google Tensor
Google Tensor

According to Google, the Tensor is mainly good at artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). These algorithms usually remain invisible to the end user but are frequently used by the camera, for example, for HDR and nite mode. But Google also thinks it can benefit from speech recognition. This is where the Pixel 6 should really beat the competition.

Pixel 6 in stores

The Google Pixel 6 with its matte aluminium finish and the lightly polished Pixel 6 Pro with Android 12 will be officially announced around the autumn of 2021. We hope to hear some missing details as well. Including pricing.

Pixel 6 Series Fpt

Leaked design Google Pixel 6 shows revamped camera

Rumours ·

Once again, Google seems to be on the verge to overhaul its Pixel line-up. After the introduction of the Pixel 5 with the lack of a larger XL flagship, this time it is the turn of the Pixel 6 with a completely new design. The main focus seems to be on a completely new camera module.

All this appears on renders commissioned by YouTuber Jon Prosser. We are always somewhat cautious about Prosser' leaks but the authenticity of the images are confirmed by Max Weinbach, altho he mentions the colours aren't accurate. That is something we can live with. Two things immediately stand out; the quirky camera module and the presence of a larger size.

Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 XL

2 sizes, new camera module

We'll start with that camera module. What to do with the ever-growing camera sensors? In the first generation of Pixel phones, Google used a tapered design. This way, the camera module didn't stick out, which resulted in a smooth unibody. Modules have become so thick (and we are used to thin phones) that many manufacturers choose to let the module stick out. Others place the camera(s) on an island that sticks out. Google seems to opt for a completely own solution with the Pixel 6; a full-length bar.

Google Pixel 6 Pro camera bump

That may look a little weird but the idea behind it is anything from. The disadvantage of a protruding camera in the corner is that it wobbles when you put it on a table. And that is rather annoying. With Google's solution, that problem is solved. Moreover, it looks very distinctive, you immediately recognise a Pixel 6 immediately. And that's adds value as well.

Pixel 6 front

The second notable thing about this leak; two sizes. Something Google stopped doing starting from the Pixel 5. Yes the somewhat similar Pixel 4a 5G can be seen as the larger 'Pixel 5 XL' but that phone wasn't waterproof. Whether the Pixel 6 and its bigger brother will also get equivalent and flagship-worthy hardware remains to be seen. It is rumoured that Google is working on its own chipset, possibly to replace the Snapdragon chipsets from Qualcomm. It is unclear whether these will be found inside the Pixel 6 series.

Pixel 6 XL or Pixel 6 Pro?

A name for the larger Pixel is easy to guess; 'Pixel 6 XL'. However Prosser is using the name 'Pixel 6 Pro'. If Google indeed opts for a Pro-version then that suggests a difference in specifications, besides the larger screen of course. None of this is very obvious but we're happy to be contradicted. We also have some time in the meantime; an announcement isn't expected until the fall of 2021.

By now it is clear that Google is rather searching for an appropriate strategy for its Pixel phones. Get it? Searching?! But enough fooling around, after skipping a high-end Pixel, Google is now considering making such a flagship again. And it might come sooner than expected.

After years of coming up with a pricy flagship that could not compete with the competition, Google abandoned that whole idea. The Google Pixel 5 is at best a premium mid-range phone. Yes it has a great camera but the screen is rather small, the hardware is not very powerful and the battery is not very large either. In itself, it's fine, but apparently Google is reconsidering its options once again.

Google Pixel line up
Will the Pixel series expand faster than expected?

And so the rumour of today is that the Pixel 6 will once again become a high-end flagship. And instead of in the fall, it may be released sometime in March 2021, according to Max Weinbach. That's quite a bold statement if you ask us. Max, however, has heard it from 2 sources but is realistic enough to put the rumour in context.

Foldable Pixel

A document leaked out in August of 2020 mentioning a foldable Pixel phone; the Passport. However, it still mentioned a launch in the fourth quarter of 2021. The Pixel 5a would follow somewhere in the second quarter. Then a launch of the Pixel 6 in the first quarter of 2021 would be rather illogical. Our advice is therefore; we have to see it before we believe it. Suppose Google would release a high-end Pixel then that's also no guaranty for a really good phone. Unfortunately, that has now turned out to be the case.
