Renders show all future colours OnePlus 8 Pro
TechRadar: OnePlus 8 series coming mid-April
Pictures of OnePlus 8 Pro with 5G appeared
The OnePlus 8 is the 8th generation flagship killer and much more compact than previous years. It is not so much shorter but narrower, so it becomes easier to handle. What other innovations OnePlus has given this OnePlus 8, whether it is worth upgrading or whether you should go for the OnePlus 8 Pro we will try to explain here.
OnePlus announces a new flagship every six months and therefore the differences between generations are not very big. The 3 main differences with the OnePlus 7T from half a year ago are 1) the new location of the selfie camera 2) 5G support and 3) a much larger battery. Yes there is also a new generation Snapdragon processor installed but because the OnePlus phones naturally feel so fast we doubt if you will notice the difference. So that leaves us with the new selfie camera. It's no longer in the middle of the screen in the form of a notch, but in the left corner in the form of a punch-hole. It will be a matter of taste what you prefer. OnePlus says that the selfiecamera has a diameter of only 3.8 millimetres and therefore takes up less space. As a result, the status bar shifts a bit to the right.
All OnePlus models released in 2020 now support 5G. However, this will only be useful as soon as 5G is rolled out nationwide. As expected, this will take some time. It's nice to know that your OnePlus 8 will be able to handle this new technology and will not become redundant by then. In other words, this OnePlus 8 is future proof. You will be helped by the considerably larger battery. Compared to the 7T, this battery is 13% larger. Fast charging is possible thanks to Warp Charge 30T; 22 minutes and 50% of the battery is full again. If you want to be able to charge wirelessly you have to switch to the OnePlus 8 Pro. This also applies when you want a waterproof phone. Even though this OP8 can withstand a splash, it is not officially waterproof.
After the introduction of this OnePlus 8 we got the idea that it has been kept a bit 'small' in order to create enough distinction between it and the larger OnePlus 8 Pro. So there are many similarities with its predecessor. Think of the Fluid Display with its 90 Hz refresh rate for a nice and smooth experience, the triple camera on the back and the always very snappy feeling OxygenOS. Our advice is to also take a look at the OnePlus 7T when considering this 8. This is especially true when you want a camera with zoom. OnePlus swapped the telephoto lens with which you could zoom in without loss of quality for a macro lens for close-up shots. From now on, zooming is only possible with the Pro version.
