Oppo A53s product description

The Oppo A53s is an affordable 4G phone yet with a smooth 90Hz screen. It comes with a long battery life including fast charging, stereo speakers and with a triple camera. And all that without costing a lot of money. How much money exactly and whether it's worth it price is something we're happy to explain here.

Modern screen as a plus

Oppo's A-series is mainly used for entry-level models. Inexpensive phones but still equipped with some premium features. In the case of the A53s, that is mainly the screen. The Neo-Display has a high 90Hz display which ensures smooth animations, for example when scrolling. For this price, that's extra neat. Also modern is the round punch-hole in the corner for the selfie camera. Where other entry level phones often opt for a notch, you lose little screen space on this A53s and it still has thin screen edges.

13MP comes along nicely

On the back, we find a triple camera system. The main camera counts 13 megapixels and comes with some features and filters. Moreover, in combination with the 2MP depth camera, it can take portrait photos with blurred background. The third and last camera is also 2MP and is a macro camera. This allows you to shoot close-ups of at least 4 centimetres. Do not expect too much from it, due to the low resolution. For a beginner's phone, the camera of the A53s is very nice, partially due to the amount of functions that come standard. There is time-lapse photography and slow motion video.

Main Oppo A53s specifications

  • 6.5-inch large Neo-Display with smooth 90Hz display and HD+ resolution
  • 13+2+2MP camera with macro and depth camera
  • 8MP selfie camera with portrait mode (bokeh)
  • Entry Snapdragon 460 processor at up to 1,8GHz
  • 4GB of RAM memory, 128GB of storage (expandable with 256GB card)
  • 5000 mAh large battery with 18W fast charging
  • 4G support for fast mobile internet on the go
  • Dual speakers with Dirac sound optimisation

Quick charge yes, fast no

The A53s is powered by a Snapdragon 460 processor from Qualcomm; a lower-end chipset. It is no stranger to a hiccup here and there. The battery measures a more than decent 5000 mAh and that results in a long battery life. Moreover, the battery can be recharged quickly, with no less than 18W. A starter phone with a large battery is not unique, but one that can be recharged quickly is a lot rarer. 4G is the fastest way to access the internet while on the move, and at home on Wi-Fi the speed is limited to 802.11ac. Finally, the amount of storage memory is neat. That comes out to 128GB. If you can get by with just 64GB then cheque out the otherwise equivalent Oppo A53.

Pro and cons Oppo A53s

  • Smooth 90Hz screen
  • Large battery with fast charging
  • Stereo speakers
  • 128GB storage
  • Occasional hiccups
