Sony has announced the fifth iteration of the Xperia 1. The Xperia 1 V is the ultimate phone camera, bursting with Sony technology but prohibitively expensive.
On paper, the Xperia 1 V does not seem to differ much from its predecessor, which goes for nearly every Xperia 1 model. However, the sensor of the primary camera gets a significant update. It is the first stacked CMOS sensor in a smartphone.
Combined with technology from the Alpha series, this produces more accurate colours, especially in low-light scenarios. As a result, expect to shoot even better portrait photos. But to be clear, the Xperia 1 Mark 5 is intended primarily for professionals and people who make their living creating content.
1.7x larger camera sensor
The primary camera now has a resolution of 52MP, of which 48 is effectively used. Thanks to Pixel Binning, you store photos with a resolution of 12MP. Because this "Exmor T for mobile" sensor is 1.7x larger than its predecessor, the low-light performance, in particular, is significantly improved. Sony even claims that the dynamic range is close to a full-frame camera.
If you get tyred of the primary camera, you can always switch to the 12MP zoom camera with optical zoom from 85 to 125mm. Or use the also 12MP large ultra-wide-angle camera with a 123° wide viewing angle. Ideal for landscapes and architecture. But you can also unleash the film director in you with 4K video with optical image stabilisation, FlawlessEye, object tracking, or eye-autofocus. As always, Sony has pulled out all the stops.
Xperia 1V price
This quirky treat, full of Sony technology, is expected in late June for a suggested retail price of 1399 euros. Available colours are black, platinum silver, and khaki green. Pre-ordering the Xperia 1M5 gets you a black WH-1000XM5 with noise cancelation for free to ease the pain.
