Fairphone releases version of Fairphone 4 with /e/OS

Android-alternative focuses on privacy

Dutch company Fairphone is releasing a version of the Fairphone 4 running the open-source /e/OS. This alternative to Android has been stripped of Google apps and services. This makes e/OS ideal for those concerned about privacy.

The Fairphone 4 with /e/OS is currently only sold on Fairphone's website and only in the colour grey with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. All other specifications remain the same. This means a 6.3-inch large FHD display, a dual 48MP camera, and a largely self-repairable casing.

/e/OS is released by Muraena and is a fork of LineageOS, itself a fork of CyanogenMod. /e/OS is Android-based but stripped of all Google apps and services. As a result, /e/OS is mainly aimed at those concerned about privacy. However, it is possible to instal and use Android apps, which can be found in the AppLounge.

€50 more expensive

Those who want a newer Fairphone 5 with /e/OS instead of Android should head to Murene directly. They sell several phones, including the Fairphone 5 with the custom ROM /e/OS. It's unfortunately even more expensive than the regular Fairphone. The same goes for the Fairphone 4 /e/OS, which, with a suggested retail price of €579, is €50 more expensive than the Android version.
